For some, this fortitude provides a recognition and determination to give back, to make a significant contribution as a token of appreciation and ultimately, as a gift of inspiration to others.
Enter Ruth Strutt. Currently performing with Opera Australia, Ruth’s upbringing was far removed from the bright lights of the opera stage.
Ruth was born in Roma in Queensland. Her family moved to Uralla when Ruth was ten years old. Following a year at the Uralla Central School, Ruth commenced at PLC, Armidale in Year 7 where she quickly embraced the musical opportunities on offer.
Taking up piano and joining the choir, it wasn’t until Year 10 that she began dedicated singing lessons. On leaving school, Ruth travelled to London where, despite wanting to become an actor, she realised her true passion was singing.

The first step included a move to Melbourne to study under distinguished soprano Merlyn Quaife for twelve months (who boasts Marina Prior among her other students.)
A move to Perth followed where in 2011, Ruth completed her Bachelor of Music at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.
One of the strongest influences in Ruth’s career came through her involvement with the Armidale Musical Society where for eight years from 2001, she has appeared in countless performances while at school and in later life as she intermittently returned to live in Armidale.
“Performing with the Armidale Musical Society was one of my greatest influences. It really fostered my love of musical theatre and gave me the confidence to pursue a career,” said Ruth.
In 2016, Ruth successfully auditioned for Opera Australia and began performing with their Schools Touring program.
From here, she began her rise through the ranks, starring as a Principal Artist in the 2017 - 2018 season of Great Opera Hits.
“Performing solos on the Joan Sutherland stage at the Sydney Opera House has been surreal,” she said.
One of 2018’s most anticipated highlights for Ruth will be her return to the New England to perform in Opera North West’s concert series held in Armidale and Inverell in September.
Aptly named, ‘Banquet: A Musical Feast, the gala concert will star internationally renowned bass baritone Teddy Tahu Rhodes who is making a triumphant return to the region following his appearance at Opera in the Paddock in 2016.
As a young girl growing up in Armidale, Ruth never imagined she would one day return home to perform in front of her home crowd alongside Teddy Tahu Rhodes.
The performance will also feature lyric coloratura tenor Henry Choo and celebrated soprano Peta Blyth. Internationally acclaimed pianist Rhodri Clarke will accompany the stellar line-up and perform one of the most challenging solos for piano.
“It is such an honour for me to be able to return home to give something back and to perform in this world-class event,” said Ruth.
Banquet: A Musical Feast will take place in the Armidale Town Hall on Friday, September 21, and at the Inverell Town Hall on Saturday, September 22. Tickets and further information: www.operainthepaddock.com.au Tel: 1800 240 301
