Local State MP Adam Marshall secured $2,995 in funding to purchase a life-saving Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

“The Men’s Shed wrote to me in June concerned that they didn’t have a defibrillator onsite,” Mr Marshall said.

"They were worried about the implications for their members and guests should someone take a turn for the worst.”

Defibrillators are now commonplace at sporting grounds and other areas where people of multiple ages congregate.

“I was happy to take their request for support up with the Premier,” Mr Marshall said, “and was delighted when she agreed to fund the cost of the device.

“Now, the volunteers at the shed have a new addition to their first aid kit, and can respond quickly in case of emergency. Often, that initial window makes all the difference to a patient’s outcome while Ambulance paramedics are on their way.”

Statistically, for every minute that a person is not receiving defibrillation or CPR after a sudden cardiac event, their chances of making a full recovery decrease by 10 per cent. This means for someone who has had a heart attack, a five-minute delay reduces their chances of survival by half.

“These small portable defibrillators are easy to use and the latest models actually talk the user through how to use them in case of emergency,” Mr Marshall said.

“Men are also more at risk of heart attacks. The risk increases steadily from age 40 onwards, and I commend the volunteers for being prepared for any emergency.”

Armidale Men’s Shed President Roy Powell agrees.

“It one of those things that's nice to know you have,” Mr Powell said. “You hope you never need it, but if something does happen, we are now prepared.”
