In front of a big crowd for Old Boys’ Day, the Spudettes’ defence proved hard to puncture as they held out the Roosters team for a 10-nil triumph.
Kia Blair and Sophie Gaukroger posted tries for the home side to claim the win. Coach Graham Smith was thrilled with the efforts of his team and said they kept their game plan simple which sealed the win.
“We played really well which was really good. Their defence was really good,” he said.
“Sophie Gaukroger and Brittany [Youman] were our best players but the whole team played really well.
“We just stuck to the basics, that is what we have been talking about – just go forward.
“I think the ladies were a bit surprised how if you get the little things right, things come together for us.

“Everyone was very excited and it was good too because it was Old Boys' Day and a lot of older players came back and watched and we had a good crowd there.
“I am just proud of the ladies and the effort they put in on the weekend and hopefully we can back it up and do it again this weekend.”
Gaukroger picked up three best and fairest points from the referee, as well as players’ player while Blair managed one Group points.
Heading into the final three games of the season, the battles don’t get any easier for the Spudettes with games against top four sides, starting with Warialda this Saturday.
“I am sure the ladies will be happy for the ladies to turn up against Warialda this week and see how we go from there,” Smith said.
“We will just stick to our basic game plan and just wait for a mistake from the other side hopefully.”
A conversion was all that separated the Guyra men’s side from an under-strength Ashford team as they went down 22-20.
Ashford brought just 15 players over for the crucial clash and were reduced when they had one sin binned but Guyra struggled to capitalise.
Jayden Field and Dan Vidler scored opening half tries for the hosts to be down 18-10 at half-time. Ashford stretched their lead to 22-10 before the Spuds duo scored another one each to bring the deficit to 22-20 but it wasn’t enough as the Roosters claimed the win.
“Our defence was a bit scrappy, we just weren't hitting and sticking. It was a game we just couldn't fully get in to,” player-coach Anthony Dittman said.
“We have got to get back to training and start getting back to our best to cement our top four spot. It is tight now so anything can happen.
“We had about seven players out on the weekend and it could be worse this weekend with a few more injuries.
“This game is crucial for us.”
