The federal government and the Hunter New England Primary Health Network announced in June, 2017 that headspace Tamworth would expand to four outreach sites, including Armidale.
Centacare NENW chief executive Fergus Fitzsimons welcomed the new service, aimed at young people aged 12 to 25 years, which opened in Armidale on Tuesday.
“It can be difficult for [young people] to know what is safe, to know what is OK … and that’s where programs like headspace can help,” Mr Fitzsimons said.
“I’m incredibly proud of the headspace Outreach team we have put together.
“This team will be working on the ground to make meaningful connections with young people who have developed a disruption in their physical, emotional or social wellbeing.”
Headspace outreach services will provide specialist mental health services for young people aged 12 to 25 years, with an early intervention focus.
The headspace model is based on an easy-to-use, enhanced primary care service that works in an integrated way to meet the needs of young people who have developed a disruption of their physical, emotional and or social wellbeing.
The official service launch was attended by representatives from the Hunter New England Central Coast Primary Health Network, headspace National, Beyond Blue, and local schools.
Outreach services will also be available in Gunnedah, Moree and Narrabri.
The city’s headspace service will operate out of Centacare office on Rusden Street.
