Just six weeks later she sadly passed away from liver, pancreatic and colon cancer, and now, Mrs Murray is determined to give back.
Teaming up with Uralla Shire Council mayor Michael Pearce and her husband, Armidale Regional Council mayor Simon Murray, the trio will shave their heads for cancer research.
“I’ve found for myself, the process has been good for me dealing with it, it’s amazing so many people come to talk to me about their cancers and experiences – it’s quite emotional,” Mrs Murray said.
“I don’t think a lot of people acknowledge the grief, I know for me it happened very quickly so it’s probably a good thing but then we’re just left.
“You think about the families dealing with long term cancer sufferers and it’s so hard on them as well.”
The money will go to Love Your Sister, where 100 per cent of the proceeds go to cancer research.
That’s what I love about the country spirit, everyone bucks together and looks after each other.

The mayor’s said they couldn’t have picked a better cause to get behind.
“We’re not like the city, we don’t have the luxury of travelling ten minutes down the road for cancer treatment,” Cr Pearce said.
“That’s what I love about the country spirit, everyone bucks together and looks after each other.”

So far, Mrs Murray has raised $600, and the mayor’s will auction off the opportunity to dole out the first blow.
It’s a cause close to Cr Murray’s heart, having benefited from cancer treatment himself.
“I think when it happens quickly you’re not really aware of it, it’s ahead of you, like you’re flying a very fast aeroplane and you’re not in control of it,” Cr Murray said.
“When you have a loved one going through a long treatment you can come to grasps with it.”
The event is on May 25 at the Guyra Bowling Club from 6pm.
