Locals from schools such as G.S Kidd Memorial School and St Xavier’s and child care centres like Lil Achievers teamed up with firefighters from Gunnedah Fire and Rescue 314 to take part in a variety of activities.
Gunnedah firefighter Sam Turner told The Namoi Valley Independent activities included a variety of hands-on and educational opportunities for the kids.
“The main thing I guess for us is getting kids used to who we are as firefighters and making them feel aware and comfortable of who we are and approaching us if they are ever in trouble or need us for anything,” Mr Turner said.
“We are having some fire safety tutorials with the kids to get them used to knowing what to do if there is a fire and how to call for help and that sort of thing.
“As well as that, the games and that sort of stuff is giving them the chance to really see what we do with the hoses, ladders and other equipment all while having a bit of fun with it.”
Teams are already beginning to assemble in Gunnedah for this weekend’s championships.
The Namoi Valley Independent caught up with a team from Ulladulla Fire and Rescue 477 as they prepare for tomorrow’s competition.
Ulladulla Fire and Rescue Captain Paul Collins said the team had traveled a long way to a part of the championships.
“As a team we have working really hard to get to these kinds of events and do the best we can,” Captain Collins said.
“We have made the 10-or-so hour trip up here so you can bet we will be working really hard to do our best and hopefully go well.”
