The ceremony was conducted by Gordon Taylor, president of the town’s RSL branch and also of the RSL in New England. The Reverend David Robinson conducted the prayer.
After the laying of wreaths, the graves of five servicemen and women who had died in the past year were “unveiled”. This involved a ceremony at each grave where a eulogy was spoken and the national flag unveiled.
The day was to continue with a “gunfire breakfast” for the attendees at the Returned Services Club and then with marches throughout the region.
