More than 100 people attended the event run by the UNE Women’s Society, including students from Bangladesh, Korea, and Nepal.
“We had people from the community, students and staff here at the university, and a large range of ages,” said Catherine Millis, the society’s President; “everything from an 18-year-old just starting university to people who are lecturers here at the university.”

The day is held all around the world to celebrate women’s achievements.
"The purpose is to get together and to empower women, support each other, acknowledge their successes, and talk about issues they've had being a woman," Ms Millis said.
Ms Millis was optimistic about the university’s attitude to women, given recent revelations of sexual abuse on campus. "I think the way people view women is changing very rapidly,” she said. ”The report was a wake-up call."
The Society aims to support female-identifying students, and offers a safe space where women can relax, socialise and study.
