EXTRA buses will operate between UNE and the city to accommodate students and staff during O Week.
Edwards Coaches operations manager James Cross said the extra services would continue up until Easter.
“We want to help new and returning students settle in to the city, as well as campus,” Mr Cross said.
The bus company services two bus routes dedicated to the University of New England, the 481 and 482.
These routes run from the CBD on to campus and pass many units, where students may live.
They also take in Girraween, along Elm Avenue and up to the centre of campus.
“Past experience shows extra services are needed at the beginning of the year to help students accessing lectures and tutorials,” Mr Cross said.
Begun in 1957, Edwards Coaches operates more than 40 buses and five coaches round the clock.
The service has just introduced recharged and discount cards for cashless travel. There are three types of card, the Armidale discount card, Uralla discount card and the recharge card.
Mr Cross advises most students would get better value from an Armidale discount card, since this covers bus journeys that are mainly the same.
“But if you go to different places often, then the recharge card is for you,” he said.
Another popular service for UNE students and staff is the airport transfer, while the 485 bus route takes in Armidale Railway Station.
O Week starts on Friday, February 23 and is aimed at helping new students settle into campus life.
First-year students at Earle Page College are given the run of the college for the first few days to help them settle in and feel at home.
A main feature of O Week is Lifesaver Day, where up to 1200 students can meet about 140 different businesses and organisations.
Lifesaver Day is an opportunity to promote the town’s and UNE’s services, along with the other businesses, clubs, societies, community groups and sporting bodies.
Orientation Week is also held for international students, to introduce them to the teaching and learning environment so they become familiar with the campus, services and key people who can assist them in their studies.
There are often free giveaways and great deals from local businesses also during this time.
