The project will see accommodation built at the historic property, expansion of the cafe and shop and re-purposing of existing farm buildings.
ARC councillor Ian Tiley said without doubt the project would be a wonderful contribution to regional tourism.
“The Saumarez Homestead as we know is recognised nationally, I would even say internationally, as an icon of significance,” Cr Tiley said.
The contribution is part of a joint application with the National Trust of Australia for the $2.7 million project.
It’s expected to increase overnight visitors to Armidale by 16,000 people a year, and return $6.5 million in economic output.
Saumarez Homestead property manager Les Davis said the project would be a key economic driver for the region.
“Saumarez Homestead will dramatically increase it’s competitiveness as a destination, not just a place to visit,” Mr Davis said.
“The generosity of the White family gave us the original gift, and we’ve had their ongoing support.”
The development would see 16 new jobs created and $3.5 million growth in gross regional product.
Council submitted five separate applications to the Regional Growth – Environment and Tourism Fund in April this year.
The only application successful in moving to round two was the Saumarez Homestead Sustainable Tourism Project.
A business case for the next round is due to be submitted on October 31.
