Indigenous Students’ Association president Dawn Lewis, a Woolwonga woman, is the first person in her family to go to university.
“We are here today to make sure our siblings, our kids in high school, when they come to university they are getting support,” Ms Lewis said.
The university is unresponsive to claims of racism, bullying and intimidation of Indigenous students, members of the association claim.
An Indigenous governance committee at the UNE Oorala Centre is one of their proposed solutions.
UNE vice-chancellor Annabelle Duncan said grievances are dealt with according to university processes.
“Claims of racism are always taken seriously by the University, and investigated and acted upon,” Ms Duncan said.
“The University is currently undertaking a review of governance of indigenous matters,” she said of the Indigenous governance committee proposal.
