That’s the message from Australian actor Richard Carter who sat down with The Express last week to talk about his latest film Mad Max: Fury Road, life in the country and the upcoming Armidale Regional Council elections.
The Hollywood actor moved to Armidale more than a decade ago, in search for a more peaceful lifestyle.
“It [Armidale] has all the advantages of great education, excellent water, a wonderful climate and peace,” he said.
Everything needs a guiding hand. Every film needs someone at the helm that knows what they’re doing.

And with the CBD revitalisation, APVMA relocation, new industrial opportunities and TAFE’s digital hub headquarters all coming to fruition, Mr Carter said strong leadership was needed to continue the city’s upward trend.
“I can see changes in Armidale which is really great for everyone that lives here,” he said. “You can see there is a momentum building.
“Everything needs a guiding hand. Every film needs someone at the helm that knows what they’re doing and from my dealings with Ian Tiley, I get this feeling of security.
“I think he would be a very rounded and respected councillor.”
Mr Carter said utilising opportunities in tourism and technology would also help the region prosper.
“I don’t think a lot of people realise the NBN is the ‘railway’ of the 21st century,” he said.
“When I connect with studios, once upon a time I’d have to be physically there but now I can do it all from my own studio through the NBN.”
Not only is Armidale the first regional city to be fully connected to the NBN network, Mr Carter said the city also had the advantages of space and good water.
“I think this is the greatest area you could possibly live in,” he said.
“I think Ian Tiley, working with Adam Marshall – it’s a pretty great combination to have.”
Mr Carter is known for his roles in The Great Gatsby, Happy Feet, the Australian Television series Rake and as The Bullet Farmer in Mad Max: Fury Road which premiered last Sunday, August 13, on 9GO!.
