Riches competed at the Australian Junior Age Division Championships at the Capricorn Resort Golf Club on the Gold Coast last week.
The five-year-old played in the six years and under category where some of his competitors were more than a year older than him.
Riches had rounds of 36, 35 and 38 to be narrowly edged out by Gympie’s Chase Rendell to receive runner up.
His performances at the Championships saw the youngster selected to play for Australia in America at the World Stars of Junior Golf and the Junior Olympics later this year.
The up-and-coming star has the local region in his sights though and decided to stay on home turf to master his craft.
