Including Citizen of the Year Nicole Corry who gave up her job as a registered nurse in her 40s when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
The disease sent her on a worldwide quest for answers, a journey she wrote about in a blog that was eventually published in 2015 as a book: Multiple Sclerosis and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant: One Patient’s Journey.
Now Nicole has been recognised as Guyra’s Citizen of the Year, not because of MS but because of her inspiring drive to ensure there is always support for others in need.
Once her health stabilised, Nicole volunteered at The Hub and began to study business at TAFE.
She is now employed as the business administrator at The Hub and has just returned to full-time work as a nurse at Armidale Hospital.
“It’s really nice to be acknowledged for the work you do in the community,” she said.

“When I accepted the award I also wanted to acknowledge all of the people who do work in the community.
“People like the lady that makes jam, or the lady that knits things for people overseas that she’s never going to see.
“All of those people come together to make Guyra such a wonderful community.”
Nicole is still a major force behind the Guyra Community Garden and has been on the committee since its inception.
Her motivation is driven to ensure that there is support for those in need in the community and is constantly going above and beyond in her endeavours.
“It was very unexpected and very nice and I feel very humbled,” she said.
The Australia Day winners were announced at a celebration dinner in the evening on January 24.
Guyra Veteran Golfers won the Contribution to Sports and Recreation award.
When Guyra Veteran Golfers was formed in 1996, it started as a small group of five playing twice a month.
It has since grown to be a successful and social event which now boasts a membership of around 40 people, and holds weekly events every Tuesday.
The golfers have been instrumental in raising fund for the beautification and refurbishment of the club and support many local charities. The Sports Award went to local girl Kelsie Youman who has achieved success in cross country, athletics, cricket and soccer. Community Event of the Year was awarded to the Guyra Lions Club Senior Citizens Mystery Tour.
