Armidale Regional Council has approved funding of $20,000 from the Stronger Communities Grants program towards the creation and construction of a memorial recognising the unmarked graves of Aboriginal people at Armidale Cemetery.
Council Administrator Dr Ian Tiley said Council supports the Gayinyaga Aboriginal Advisory Committee in its efforts to construct the monument at Armidale Cemetery.
“There are a range of reasons why a grave may be unmarked. The cost of headstones has long been significant in preventing families from marking the final resting place of their loved ones,” said Dr Tiley.
“Sadly, the absence of an identifiable burial site can be the cause of ongoing hurt – for individuals, families and community.”
