Mr Rees said that the students are about to begin a town planning unit at school. In an effort to bring in some first hand experience as they introduced the subject, teachers approached Armidale Regional Council to seek some expert input.
“This was a wonderful opportunity for us to tell the students what we do,” Mr Rees said. “The work of surveyors and planners is critical in both small and big developments. However, the work involved is often not seen and the importance of that work is not always appreciated.”
Ms Broun showed students detailed house plans and explained what was involved in securing a development application, while Mr Rees introduced a significant local project to outline the many issues around large scale building developments. This is a visible project that the students will be able to watch unfold in the future.
“The new Armidale Airport is a major local project that is about to get underway. We were able to show the students an animated fly through of the proposed facility and discuss many of the issues around such a large-scale development,” said Mr Rees.
“The students were great and really engaged with the subject. They had many questions, were keen to share their thoughts and came up with some really mature and insightful observations!”
