ARMIDALE Athletics’ summer season started fast with the 12th annual Sportspower 400 metre Invitational Handicap on Wednesday.
Twelve of the region’s best 400 metre runners descended on Armidale’s Harris park to battle for the shield.
The runners took their places on various parts of the track for the race. Glen Innes’ Neville McIntyre started at the front mark and held the lead until the final 40 metres when Armidale’s Henry Sindel shot past McIntyre to take the lead and win the race.
It is always a good kick-off for the season.

McIntyre held onto second place and Grace Cassidy took third. Armidale Athletics’ club president Jay Stone was the back marker for the race and said it was a great way to start the season.
"It was a pretty good crowd, good roll up and good support for the athletes,” he said.
"Some people travelled down from Glen Innes and up from Tamworth because we had some athletes from there.
"It is always a good kick off for the season. It is always a good event for the crowd because there is usually a close finish. It was pretty exciting and a high quality performance.”
Armidale Athletics club continue their regular season with weekly meets at Harris Park on Wednesday afternoons at 5.15pm. Stone said anyone is welcome to try it out no matter what age or ability.
