On Tuesday five different community providers assembled in the Beardy Street Mall to provide information about services, a barbecue lunch and pieces of paper on which messages of support could be shared publically.
One of the event’s organisers Each project manager Andrew Speers said the event was about being inclusive.
“It’s really about anti-discrimination and acceptance not promoting a political agenda aside from making people aware that in this community, our community, have a challenge by the fact that homophobia exists and can have a really profound effect on young people,” he said.
“If you look at some of the statistics among young people 80 per cent of LGBTIQ youth are bullied, most of that bullying takes place in schools, youth suicide rates among queer kids are way higher than other groups in the community.”
There are plans to commemorate the event again next year.
