Yesterday’s morning tea was attended by hospital staff and city historians, who toured the building one last time.
After plans for the $60 million new hospital build were revealed last year, members of the Armidale and District Historical Society objected to the demolition of the old infectious diseases building which had stood since 1911.
However attempts to save the building were unsuccessful.
Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall said he had “mixed emotions” about the forthcoming demolition but was excited about the upgrade.
“The infectious diseases ward is a very important piece of history of the hospital precinct,” he said.
“Sadly, healthcare has changed … the $60 million redevelopment is making way for the next generation of healthcare.”
Armidale and District Historical Society members hope to archive photos and artefacts from the ward.
“It is important that the documentation and the story is cared for,” society president Judy Grieves said.
