GLENHOPE Alpaca farm owners David and Bronwyn Mitchell are eyeing markets in Europe for their alpaca fleece which could attract up to $70 a kilo.
The pair ventured overseas to meet prospective buyers earlier this year.
“We are still in that phase where we are negotiating prices and product lines that are really, really exciting," Mrs Mitchell said yesterday.
Alpacas are outstripping sheep as key exports, with one alpaca alone fetching $500 for its meat, skin and other products, Mrs Mitchell said.
The Mitchells aim to be seed stock producers of top line animals.
