The school has received the School Hero Award from non-profit organisation Swags for Homeless in recognition of its fundraising efforts.
The accolade came as part of the charity’s annual Hero Awards, presented to groups and individuals for their involvement in distributing the organisation’s “backpack beds”. Parent assistant Jenny Teege said the school’s Mini Vinnies group took on the project after pupils realised there were homeless people in Armidale.
While the group set out to raise the $68 required to distribute a single swag to a homeless person, they ended up raising enough for 11 of the charity’s signature beds. Some pupils even donated money from the tooth fairy.
