The fires have been contained with four alerts still in place, while residents are urged to stay informed and monitor conditions.

Twenty-six homes, 63 sheds, 617 cattle and more than 3000 sheep have been destroyed since the blazes started on Saturday, a state control centre spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

The total number of livestock lost is expected to rise in the farming communities of Terang, Cobden, Penshurst and Camperdown, as authorities continue to assess the damage.

There are no reports of human injury and some of the homes destroyed weren't being lived in.

Landowners have been warned to be wary of asbetos in damaged buildings.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Tom Delamotte said Thursday would be a generally dry day with lighter winds and no rainfall making it "better for those on the fire ground".
