The brainchild of McCrossin’s Mill Museum director Kent Mayo, U-Watch aims to provide council with creative ideas to improve the town.
Councillors felt they would have more control of the group as a 355 committee.
“If we don’t go ahead and create the 355 committee we run the risk of the group forming a committee of their own – if it’s an independent lobby group they can have a big impact,” councillor Bob Crouch said.
Council will establish the committee for an interim period of 12 months, its continuance will be reviewed at the end of that period.
A draft constitution will be received at the April meeting.
Mr Mayo created at 43 page, self-illustrated manifesto in support of the committee.
He cited the main street revitalisation, improved street signage, a One Hundred Sons memorial avenue, changes to Pioneer Park and promoting Uralla’s unique Fibonacci sequence post code 2358 as potential projects.
Councillors Isabel Strutt and Robert Bell voted against the committee.
“I accept that the group has every opportunity to stay as a private group and make comments to influence council decisions and provide their thoughts,” Cr Bell said.
“I would caution council about jumping into this with both feet.”
