Prefect Nicholas Farrer said the students are aiming to raise $10,000 for Childhood Cancer Support, a charity that aids children suffering from cancer.

“We will be raising funds through all different ways including the head shaves,” he said.

“Raising awareness is also a big campaign that they [Childhood Cancer Support] run Australia wide.

“We need everyone to jump on board because it’s a fantastic foundation.”

For more than a decade the school’s prefects have shaved their heads for a good cause every year.

The group traditionally start their campaign on War Cries Night, the first session of the school’s swimming championships, which this year fell on International Childhood Cancer Day on February 15.

Sambavan Jeyakumar said everyone had been touched by cancer in their life. 

“It adheres to a lot of people … and raising money and awareness about it is really important,” he added.

In coming months, 17 prefects and eight members staff will go under the scissors.

Boys will go cleanskin and the girls will donating long locks to a charity that makes wigs for those receiving cancer treatment.

Kitty McPhie, who chopped more than 40 centrimetres of hair, will donate her hair to Variety – The Children’s Charity.  “We had two girls and two boys cutting their hair on Thursday and Friday last week, and it was really good,” she said.

“We are just helping people who are in need. It’s only hair and it will grow back. It’s nice to know we could be helping people with cancer feel better,” she said.

“I haven’t had my hair this short since junior school.”

Headmaster Murray Guest applauded the prefects on their sense of service.

“Their chosen cause is certainly one that resonates with our community but it also says something about them individually and collectively as young people with a genuine desire to improve the lives of others,” he said.
