Judge Phil Blackmore said uniformity comes before anything else.
“The ones that win are the ones that look like they came out of a machine,” Mr Blackmore said.
“It’s really competitive here, especially with the commercial growers and potatoes.”
Mr Blackmore has been a judge for 28 years.
Previously he worked at Flemington Markets as a fruit inspector.
“It is nerve-wracking but it’s handy not to be from Guyra – I’m a disinterested party, I’m not related to anyone,” Mr Blackmore said.
And, Guyra has some of the best kept spuds he’s ever seen.
“There’s not a lot of disease here, some growers grow on their own country but many growers have grown on leased country,” Mr Blackmore said.
“A lot of times that leased country has really been cropped before.
“There’s not a disease burden in the soil in Guyra.”
