The para athlete was named the junior sportsperson of the year before she hit the road to Wollongong for the Country Championships.
Coach Jay Stone applauded Mazzei’s dedication and said she’s in for a long career.

“She is very ambitious and has the talent and determination to go a long way,” he said.
“She actually ran at the Country Championships and she raced against able-bodied competitors because she was attempting to run a qualifying time that would get her to the Australian Championships which double as the Commonwealth Games trials. She recorded a time which was comfortably under the nationals qualifying standard so the plan is to go up to the Gold Coast in a few weeks and compete against open age athletes all vying for a spot at the Commonwealth Games.”
The competition for Mazzei will be tough with the under 16 athlete one of the youngest runners.
“She is competing against able-bodied competitors or older competitors just so she has somebody to challenge her because she is a very big standout in her age group for that 400m,” Stone said.
