With City back at the crease on Saturday, Servies kept rolling on and only allowed another 17 runs to be scored before they had their 10 wickets. It wasn’t a convincing start to Servies’ second innings with the bat as opener Jarrod Burton was trapped lbw for a duck off the bowling of Karl Triebe, leaving Andy Bartik at the crease.
Burton’s opening partner Bartik was again left alone as Sandeep Sandhu departed with no runs next to his name after Triebe cleaned up his middle stump.
Bartik made 47 while a gritty middle order performance by Ben Spence (16) and Nathan Lane (23) got things back on track for Servies before Leon Clifford smashed 39 including seven fours and a six to cement a second innings total of 146.
For City, Josh Martin replied with 40 runs of his own and captain Kyle Taylor landed 31 runs but ran out of time and Servies secured the win on first innings points.
At the start of Armidale Cricket’s season, Servies captain John Elliot called for his side to stand up with the bat and show a bit of patience and said they managed to do that in their most recent match.
“That was typified in both innings with the bat,” he said.
“We just contained the amount of wickets we lost in clumps which was good and it gave a few more of the top order batsman a bit longer at the crease.”
Elliot credited the team’s strength in the field and the bowling attack of Clifford, Burton, Josh Targett, Brad Widders and himself with helping land the win.
“Outstanding bowling and fielding performance in the first innings and then we managed to score a few more runs with the stick so can't complain there.”
They didn’t manage the outright victory but Elliot said it is just something they can improve on.
“We probably missed a trick or two in the second innings as far as going for outright which was just something we have to work on if we get in that situation again, just probably be a little bit more ruthless,” he said.
