The leak was caused by an Edwards Coaches bus on the 482 route through town.
Armidale Fire and Rescue station commander Steve McWhirter said the spill could take hours to clean up.
“We were called to the intersection of Donnelly and Markham Streets,” Mr McWhirter said.
“There’s not a big fire danger but it is slippery for cars – they can slip and slide and crash into each other.”
Council staff have brought truckloads of sand to deal with the mess.
An expensive product called Spagsorb is being used to absorb the oil.
It’s a common call-out for firefighters, Mr McWhirter said.
“We get oil spills and fuel spills on the road not often but it’s reasonably common,” he said.
“A lot of times drivers don’t know, they’ve left the fuel cap off their tank.
“The police might want to have a talk to them and make sure that it wasn’t malicious and reinforce that it won’t happen again.”
The spill begins at the Donnelly Street roundabout, travels down Elm Avenue onto Trevenna Road before finishing at the University of New England post-office bus stop.
Drivers are warned to travel with caution.
