Hundreds were evacuated from Armidale Central on Sunday morning after the scorched dessert sparked alarm.
Local firies rushed to the scene while the centre’s Santa shuffled shoppers and retail workers into the street.

The smell of smoke filled the centre, but “it was literally just a burnt waffle” Gloria Jean’s worker Hannah Clark told Fairfax Media at the scene on Sunday.
“It has happened a couple of times actually, last time it was bacon.”
The centre was closed for about 10 minutes.
