Margaret Sims, a professor in early childhood education at the University of New England, was prompted to start writing a column about education about two years ago.
The column, Class Act, runs fortnightly in the Armidale Extra and online on the Armidale Express website.
Prof Sims said it was her role with the education union that led to the column, that partly led to the new column, on top of the Family Matters column she was already writing.
The academic said she thought it would be a challenge to share her views on the education system, which explained what was happening, but also offered possible solutions to problems.
Each week a variety of columnists are published in the Armidale Extra and on the Armidale Express website.
The topics range from gardening to psychology, as well as education, religion and history.
With 2017 drawing to a close we have decided to take the opportunity to talk to some of our writers about their columns.
As well as explaining what they write about, and what insight they are trying to provide, we also asked them about the feedback they receive from the community.
