Nine NSW state championship titles, 11 podium placings and a plethora of top 10 finishes indicate just how big it was as the club – in conjunction with the University of New England – hosted the 2017 NSW XCO State Championships.
The championships were held at the SportUNE Mountain Bike Trails as 114 competitors took part in the two-day event.
The titles were raced in the Cross Country Olympic (XCO) format which involves a lap race on a 4.8-kilometre track with competitors completing between two and seven laps.
Leading the way for NEMTB was the Harris duo.
Michael claimed the Elite Men crown while Holly was victorious in the Elite Women category.
Emily Wooster (Junior Women [U19]), Isabella Hosking (U17), Sabrina Ho (U15), Pen Sowann (Expert Men), Jacqueline King (Masters 3/4 Women), Jo Waugh (Masters 5+ Women) and David Harris (Masters 5+ Men) rounded out the wins for the host club.
NEMTB president Peter Hosking said he was very happy that Armidale had once again presented a professional event with all the supporting facilities people could ask for.
NEMTB was also happy with the success of the club members at the competition.
The club said: “It takes a lot of effort from so many volunteers – from timing, track building/maintenance/preparation, media, coaches, registrations, marshals, commissaries – and the significant input of NEMTB’s branch of the 2 Wheel Academy with all its additional volunteers. With everyone contributing and working together, mountain biking in Armidale will continue to grow. Not just for the local riders, but also for mountain bike tourism.”
The state championships were a small warm-up for NEMTB and UNE before Armidale hosts the national championships in February next year.
It comes following the completion of two successful and well received national series rounds in Armidale during the 2016/17 season.
For the National Championships – to be held from February 23-25, 2018 – NEMTB will be tying all the technical sections together to produce a demanding course.
The club said the nationals are expected to draw over 700 people to town for the duration of the event.
