Thunder and lightning rolled across the city on Friday night, drenching the suburbs and triggering multiple calls to emergency services for fallen powerlines and damaged trees.
The couple were struck by lightning on Sunset Drive in Chirnside Park around 8.40pm on Friday, police spokeswoman Leonie Johnson said.
"The woman, who was in her 20s, was conveyed to hospital but died overnight," she said.
The man, also in his 20s, was injured and remains in hospital, she said.
Police said it was believed his injuries were not life-threatening.
Nine News reported the couple had been watching the storms while standing between a car and a tree.
