The exhibition, which opened last Friday, November 10 at the New England Regional Art Museum, weaves together her observations and influences through patterns and layering.
“These intricate compositions, draw the viewer in by the decorative patterning and highly appealing colour palette that pervades the entire exhibition,” said Rachael Parsons, NERAM’s Manager Curatorial and Exhibitions.
“It is only through a more careful viewing that the full detail within the work reveals itself”
“Hilary’s work has a strong sense of place, one that is both local and international. The landscape of regional NSW is evident in the native flora and fauna, iconic and instantly recognisable.
“In contrast are objects and patterns that reference the art, ornate architectural features, and mosaics that one might find in Italy or Greece, no doubt the influence of Pollock’s residencies and travel in Europe. “
“These collaged references imbue the work with both a wistful fondness for home and exotic imagining of faraway places captured from her life and experience, and yet also broadly recognisable and alluring, the viewers’ attention s captured by a particular kind of flower, bird or textile pattern,” Ms Parsons said.
Artist Hilary Pollock graduated from the National Art School in Sydney and has diverse experience in animation, graphic design, children’s book illustration, painting, sculpture and printmaking.
She has exhibited both in Australia and internationally including in the Artroom Gallery, Umbria; Brick Lane Gallery, London; Art Domain Gallery, Leipzig and the Agora Gallery, New York as well as several exhibitions at New England Regional Art Museum in Armidale.
The exhibition Hilary Pollock: Designed From Life will be on display at NERAM until February 11 and all of the works are available for purchase.
