With both Shell V-Power Racing Ford Falcons in the Top Ten Shootout on Saturday afternoon, the 2017 Bathurst 1000 could be a very good race for Dick Johnson Racing. The Legends of Bathurst have been celebrated this year, with 2017 the 40th anniversary of Ford’s most famous victory in 1977. Dick Johnson is among the inductees.
Dick’ son Steven Johnson, fresh from racing in the Shannons Touring Car Masters in his #17 Ford Mustang, gave his thoughts in how Scott McLaughlin, Fabian Coulthard and the rest of the Shell V-Power Racing Team would go in both the Shootout on Saturday and in the Great Race on Sunday.
Steven’s thoughts were justified with Scott McLaughlin breaking the lap record on his Shootout lap with a 2:03.83 to gain Pole Position for Sunday’s race.
That lap is the first ever Supercars lap under the 2:04 mark, and also the first time that the lap record was broken in the shootout lap, dating back the Greg Murphy in 2003. Fabian Coulthard will line up 7th on the grid for the race, and with 161 laps before the chequered flag.
