One of the largest sheds in the southern hemisphere, a half-a-kilometre-long storage and distribution facility the size of eight MCG playing fields, has won a 6 Star Green Star As Built rating.
The giant shed leased by global logistics giant CEVA is owned and managed by Singapore-listed Frasers Property Australia in its West Park Industrial Estate in Truganina.
It was awarded Green Building Council of Australia rating for key environmental features including a 300Kw solar system, high-efficiency LED lighting, and rainwater collection and reuse.
Frasers southern region general manager Anthony Maugeri said a "whole life cycle assessment" of embodied carbon allowed the group to make design changes that reduced embodied carbon in the facility by 71 per cent.
"The operational cost savings that have been created are not only significant to the bottom line for the customer, but also reduce our carbon footprint," he said.
The 74,546-square-metre single-span shed cost $80 million to construct and is used by CEVA - run by managing director Carlos Velez Rodriguez - as a staging, storage and distribution point for Michelin and Conti tyres, NBN Co's equipment, items for Caltex's service station convenience stores and Accent shoes.
Undertaking a full life cycle assessment and educating contractors involved in the construction and development of the project were leading edge and would drive transformation of the industrial sector, GBCA's chief executive Romilly Madew said.
Truganina is a logistics and warehousing hot-spot in Melbourne's west that is attracting major companies because of its proximity to Sydney and Adelaide's highways, Melbourne's port and freeways into the city.
