Now in its ninth year, the Nepalese Women Festival celebrates ladies coming home to their maternal roots after marriage.
“This is especially dedicated to the ladies,” Armidale Nepalese Community advisor, Dr DV Subedi said.
“When girls get married they go to different parts of the world and once a year they are invited back to their maternal family.
“All the girls come together and eat, drink and dance.”
Dr Subedi said the festival has been running for almost a decade.
“In Armidale we have been organising this since 2008,” he said.
And with around 170 Nepalese people living in Armidale, it’s always a big event.
“Half of them are ladies and all of the boys organise this for the ladies,” he said.
“We offer them good, traditional food.
“The red, golden garland [that they ladies wear] means they are married.
“The boys and maternal families organise this gathering for them and the ladies do some prayers for the good health and long life of their husbands and partners.”
