Drew Young, 29, was supposed to clock off at 1pm on May 5 this year, but Armidale Local Court was told a mix-up with a concrete delivery meant he had to stay late.
The owner of the Niangala property gave Young a beer as thanks, and his boss gave him a long-neck of VB for the drive home. He was stopped by Armidale police for a random breath test at Giraween, the court heard.
Young pleaded guilty to the offence, and his solicitor, David Clifton, told the court that Young was going through a rough period in his life at the time.
“That has now settled down,” Mr Clifton said.
Found guilty, Young was fined $900 and disqualified from driving for six months, backdated to the day his licence was suspended.
Magistrate Michael Holmes said any level of drink-driving was considered a serious offence.
“The community expects it to be dealt with seriously,” he said.
