A ‘Maker Party in a Box’ for the Maker Lab at the library and a donation to the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM) was presented by Telstra on Friday at a morning tea held at the Armidale War Memorial Library.

The donation was a thank you to the Armidale community on behalf of the Telstra Board who recently held their board meeting in the city.
The board visited Armidale in June, attending a number of events including a presentation by Armidale Regional Council on the region’s smart city evolution, a tour of the NERAM storeroom and the Howard Hinton Collection and a tour of UNE’s Smart Farm.
Armidale Regional Council CEO Peter Dennis said the positive response from the Telstra Board to our region’s ongoing innovation in business, education, technology and research clearly shows we are a region punching above its weight.
“The board were blown away with the local innovative business and research already well underway in the Armidale region and the amazing Australian art collection held at NERAM,” said Peter Dennis.
“It was an absolute pleasure to showcase Council and the region’s smart technology plans. We are already developing a wonderful collaborative relationship with Telstra on a number of exciting projects.”
Telstra’s Community Engagement Manager Chris Simon said Telstra are pleased to be able to provide a ‘Maker Party in a Box’ to the Armidale library that will help facilitate technology workshops.
“Technology and innovation are a central part of Australia’s future, and this program is about building these abilities in our local young people – we want Armidale kids to catch the digital bug.
“Telstra is also honoured to be able to provide a donation to the New England Regional Art Museum and help them upgrade their telephone system. During their recent visit to the area, the Telstra Board and senior leadership team saw firsthand the important role art and culture play in the community and how the museum is playing a vital role in providing these services.
“The new phone system will allow the Museum to better connect with the local community and continue their great work.”
NERAM Director Robert Heather thanked Telstra for their donation and sees the installation of the new telephone system as essential in enabling staff and volunteers to provide visitors with excellent customer services.
“In making this donation Telstra is leading by example as the generous support of corporate sponsors makes it possible for regional cultural organisations such as NERAM to create new artistic events and provide essential educational activities for our communities.”
