Investigators have been trying to trace the origins of the “significant sum” of money found in Beardy St in Armidale on June 29.
Police are remaining tight-lipped on the exact amount of money found, but said it was in notes and enclosed together.
New England Inspector Roger Best told the Armidale Express police had searched the area but had exhausted many leads.
“This is a significant quantity of money and someone owns it,” he said.
“Police are very keen to locate the rightful owner, because someone is missing it.”
Inspector Best praised the Good Samaritan who handed in the money and urged anyone with information to come forward.
“If they person can detail the amount of money found and what it was contained in, police would only be too happy to reunite the owner with it,” he said.
