They took on Glen Innes-Guyra who made the students pay early before the reigning premiers clicked into gear and ran away with the game.
We just played well.
- Chris Kelly
For the remainder of the game, the GhostStags struggled to find an answer for Albies’ form at Bellevue Oval.
The hosts posted 64 points to Glen-Guyra’s 12.
Co-coach Chris Kelly said the result was pleasing after a couple of sluggish performances in their previous matches.
“We just played well. We got a pretty good full strength team back early from their holidays so we were on deck and ready to go,” he said.
“They had their wake-up call when we played Glen the last time and certainly, while we didn't have much preparation in terms of training, they played really well.”
While Albies were dominant across the park, the team's three points went to Tom Condon while James Reynolds picked up two and Tom McDonald claimed one.
“He [Condon] had a really good game, strong in defence, strong ball running options and added a bit of spark to our backline,” Kelly said.
“Two points went to James Reynolds who was really good, distributed and took some good runs when the opportunities presented themselves.”
Albies will back up to take on university rivals Robb College this Saturday.
Kelly said his side have set themselves up to be contenders for the trophy again this season and a win against Robb will consolidate their standing.
“It is a big game,” he said.
“We would like to win that.
“They played good footy against us last time we played and I think we probably got a wake-up call.”
The premiers have to do it without two of their top tier players in Pete Brooker and Jono Green.
Brooker is out for a long stint after breaking his foot against the GhostStags and Green will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury.
“Two frontline first graders are missing so you have to deal with that and we have the depth to do it,” Kelly said.
