Together they formed the Uniting Church of Australia.
Forty years on, the church has congregations across the country.
Armidale Uniting Church elder Des Bowlay said the church would celebrate with a special service on Sunday.
“There was a sense of unity within the church, of overcoming the dispersal of interests and denominational differences in theology,” he said.
“It was about moving towards a church for the future.
“Churches working together and combining resources meant we could do more.”
Reverend Robert Luxton will deliver the Sunday service.
“It’s an important point in the life of the church, 40 years on is quite an achievement and we trust the church will be here in another 40 years time,” Mr Luxton said.
The service is on Sunday June 18 from 9:30am at the Uniting Church on Rusden Street, with lunch to follow.
