A blast of frost and sub-zero temperatures saw Armidale wake to its coldest morning this year.
The mercury dipped to a low of -3.9 degrees on early Tuesday.
Wednesday will also be freezing with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting a morning low of -3 degrees before reaching a top of 12.
Temperatures will have to plummet a little lower to reach record-breaking levels – with the coldest May day recording a low of -7.9 degrees in 2004.
Glen Innes also experienced their coldest morning of the year with a low of -4.1 degrees recorded near the airport.
Across the state, Sydney shivered through its coldest May night in 18 years.
