The Uralla based photographer discovered photography as an art form when he began travelling the “hippy trail” between Australia, India and England.

“Travelling in the 1970’s was before mass tourism and I went to out of the way places, met unusual people, and had exciting experiences,” Mr Coblyn said.

“These fired my imagination and kindled my interest in capturing my perceptions on film.”

Mr Coblyn said that as a self-proclaimed perfectionist he has always taken his photography seriously.

“Before this exhibition I only showed my photographs to friends, many of whom were very complimentary,” he said.

“When I was invited to have this exhibition, those friends strongly encouraged me to do so, which helped give me the confidence and motivation to show my work in a public space.”

His exhibition Inspired by Light is currently on show at the Uralla Print Gallery.

The name is inspired by Mr Coblyn’s love of natural dramatic light and the thrill of the chase.

“Typically it [light] only lasts a few seconds,” he said.

“I have always been inspired to capture those elusive moments when the light transforms the landscape into a magical place or alters ones perception of the ordinary into something extraordinary.”

Mr Coblyn prefers to work with the digital medium as he feels he has more control over the outcome.

“There are benefits to digital, probably the greatest being the instant visual feedback of what has been taken,” he said.

“The instantaneous images present an incredibly good opportunity for learning the capabilities of the camera and improving technique.

“Also, the quality from a full frame sensor and shooting in the Raw format is as good as the old film cameras can do.”

Out of every photograph in his exhibition Mr Coblyn said his favourite is Morning Light, a photograph of the Kennedy Range National Park in Western Australia.
