Partners in music, Matthew Coleman, known as Sketch, and Thomas Coleman, known as Tommy Shades –are also brothers in life.
“The fact that we’re brothers means there’s no risk that a disagreement could break the band up,” Sketch said.
“I think it’s really good, I don’t think it would work as well with just a friend or something like that.”
Sketch moved from the Gold Coast to Western Australia at 16 years old to go to college, but it wasn’t until he returned and met up with his brother that they began to take music seriously.
“I started doing music and running events over there [in WA], it was totally accidental that Tom was doing hip hop stuff back home,” Sketch said.
“A few years later when we caught back up we had taken different influences from music and we started mucking around and found we worked really well together.”
The two started as event promoters and began DJing from there.
They describe their music with one word – party.
“Genres come and go, but the reason why we’ve been able to ride different waves is because at the end of the day our whole brand is about partying with us and having a good time,” Sketch said.
“We try and make sure we still listen to a lot of music that isn’t electronic, just because you don’t want to get stuck in a feedback loop.”
The duo found fame through the internet and encourage aspiring DJ’s to do their own thing.
Sketch said some DJ’s play for more than ten years before being hitting the big time.
“The main advice is to just keep on doing it, if you love it you’ll be doing it anyway really,” he said.
“We see a lot of young DJ’s who’ve been doing it for a year or two and haven’t made the big festival circuit yet so they get discouraged.
“Just don’t rush it – that’s the key.”
Bombs Away will play at the New England Hotel on Saturday April 1 as part of the Intensive Series tour.
The event starts at 9pm, cost is $25 and tickets are available at oztix.com.au.
