About 10.45am on Sunday, fire crews were alerted to the blaze that broke out at the Armidale Waste and Recycling Centre, off Long Swamp Rd.
Two Fire and Rescue NSW crews from the Armidale station responded to the fire, and were backed by two brigades from the Dumaresq Rural Fire Service (RFS).
An excavator and a water tanker were also called to assist the crews on scene.
The fire was sparked in the depot area and a spokesperson for Fire and Rescue NSW said the blaze took hold of a large area of mulch.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze and blanketed the area with foam to prevent any re-ignition of the blaze.
The scene was declared safe about two hours later.
