The local university is one of eight in the country who will line up for the inaugural sevens competition.
UNE is the only regional university in the competition and Etheridge will help guide the players along.
Sport UNE’s Tom Bower will coach the side and interested players are now asked to register to compete for positions in a trial at Consett Davis Fields on March 12.
Players are required to be 17 years and over but don’t need to have sevens experience to try out.
Playing for the UNE Lions will put participants on the national stage with the competition a pathway to higher representation.
Coaches from the side have been in Sydney with the national women’s team to develop their skills help their own players develop.
The competition will run from August through to October and athletes who make the squad will be required to train from June until October.
Interested players can visit sportune.com.au/une-lions to sign up for the trial.
