The arena at the PCYC now boasts an impressive five strips that are of international standards.
For the past three years Head Coach for New England Terry Watts has run four classes per week between the UNE Fencing Association and the Armidale PCYC. The success of the local members who have attended regional competitions and brought back a fair share of gold medals prompted the change.
“The sport required a dedicated competition arena, in order for the sport to grow. [Fencing] opens new opportunities for young people to further engage with the community, and keep fit,” Watts said.
The renovations opened the opportunity for Armidale to host events including the annual Inter-University Fencing Tournament, regular local competitive meets for the Club Cup, more engaging school sport programs, hosting coaching development courses and advanced one on one coaching.
