Mr Behm is chair of the Canberra Writers Festival and previously worked as a senior strategic and security policy advisor to governments in the Deparments of Foreign Affairs, Prime Minister and Cabinet and Attorney-General’s and Defence.
Mr Behm believes that when it comes to political decision-making, the public do come last.
“The people absolutely come last, the politicians are so far removed from their electorates,” he said.
“These are people that earn upwards of $400,000 a year and they have no idea what it’s like to run a family on $60,000 a year.
“Once you’re living with those sort of means you don’t understand disadvantaged people.
“I’m very happy to stand on stage with Tony Windsor because he takes the needs of the electorate seriously.”
The politician, the party and the people: Why do the people always come last? is on at the Arts Lecture Theatre at UNE.
The conversation will take place on Thursday October 27 from 5:30pm.
