The singer, who was one-half of the award-winning duo McAlister Kemp, launched his solo album Against the Grain earlier this year, and the latest single, A Little More Country, dropped last week. The video features 16 guest artists.
“My idea was to just to reach out to a bunch of other Australian country artists and see if they wanted to be a part of the video, with the whole idea being that the all sing a line each of the song,” Troy said. “I must have cold canvassed about 30 or 40 acts, and a lot were too busy to do it, or weren’t allowed to do it by management or record labels, but I was lucky enough to get 16 acts that helped me out.”
Among the artists on the video are Jayne Denham, The Wolfe Brothers, Damian Baugley, Tori Darke, Chelsea Basham, Deep Creek Road, Luke O’Shea and Jasmine Rae.
They filmed themselves singing the song, and sent the clip to Troy.
“I put the video together by myself with my partner Aleesha. We just sat down, bought a program called Final Cut Pro, put it on the Mac computer and just started editing it all together. I’ve sent the video to everyone who’s in it and they all think it’s pretty cool.”
Troy wrote the song with Matt Scullion, who had the idea of writing a song about people who are more country than they realise.
“It’s a bit of a dig at people who think they’re not country music fans, it’s just saying if you’ve ever done this or done that then maybe you’re a bit more country than you think you are.
“I think it’s a cheeky, fun idea that hopefully people will like rather than getting upset about,” Troy said, laughing.
“I’m pretty excited to have a new song out, it’s been a while since Small Town Girl, so it’s nice just to keep the ball rolling.”
After the successful duo McAlister Kemp went their own ways, Troy said there had been some trepidation about his solo project, but was pleased to see many MK fans still supporting his music.
“It was a great ride. We achieved things we didn’t think we’d achieve and we created a fan base. I was nervous if they’d stick by, but it seems they’re still there.
“That’s one nice thing about country music, fans are loyal and they stick by you through everything and I feel pretty blessed that they’ve stuck by me.”
