Council passes a motion eight-votes-to-one to approach the Local Traffic Committee with a recommendation to reduce the speed limit, with councillor Natasha Ledger the only member voting against the change.
Cr Ledger said reducing the speed zone to 80km/h would not effectively reduce the risk.
“100km/h and 80km/h are one and the same,” she said.
“I would like to see the road widened or a recreational pathway installed.”
Council will also ask police to patrol the road as part of their regular New England Highway patrols.
The decision comes after Council received reports motorists were traveling at excessive speeds on the road, creating a traffic hazard.
The report says “the road has become as shortcut for “those in a hurry”.”
“The introduction and enforcement of an 80km/hr [sic] speed limit to Barley Fields Road will considerably reduce the risk of a major motor vehicle accident.”
